Sean McCusker has been performing as a freelance low brass musician in Philadelphia & beyond since 2011, when he began his degree in Music Education and Jazz Studies at Temple University's Boyer College of Music & Dance, finishing in 2016. Since then, Sean has enjoyed a busy performance schedule performing music of all types, including all eras of jazz, top 40 cover bands, musical theatre pits, symphony orchestras, polka bands, salsa bands, & more. Recent highlights include performances with Josh Lee & the Extended Family at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola (NYC), the Grammy Award Winning 8-Bit Big Band at City Winery Philadelphia, the Reading Symphony Orchestra at the Santander Performing Arts Center, La Luz Del Son at the Black Squirrel Club in Philadlephia, Polkadelphia at Naval Air Station Guantanamo Bay, & many others.
A regular fixture in nearly every Philadelphia based Big Band & Jazz Orchestra on lead, section, or bass trombone, Sean has had the opportunity to back up dozens of artists of all types, including modern jazz luminaries such as Dick Oatts, Larry McKenna, & Tony Williams (with the Jack St. Clair Orchestra), Walt Weizkopf, Gary Smulyan, Ignacio Berroa, & Steve Fidyk (with the South Philly Big Band), Seamus Blake, Jaleel Shaw, Papo Vazquez, & Kurt Rosenwinkel (with the Philadelphia Ambassador Big Band), Bobby Lyle & Aubrey Logan (with the Andrew Neu Big Band), Peter Erskine (with the No Vancancy Orchestra), Carmen Bradford, David Glasser, & Doug Lawrence (with Josh Lee & The Extended Family).
Beyond the jazz world, Sean has also backed many artists, both onstage and in the recording studio, from the Broadway, Commercial, & Pop scene, including Molly Ringwald, Haley Reinhardt, Maiya Sykes, Renee Olstead, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., Sal "The Voice" Valentinetti, Joseph Leo Bwarie, Joe Piscopo, the Village People, & Bobby Rydell.
In the classical world, Sean has performed with the Reading Symphony Orchestra (Bass Trombone), Vox Amadeus (Bass Trombone), & the Wilmington Ballet Orchestra (Tenor Trombone), & the Montgomery County Symphony Orchestra (Tenor Trombone).
In addition to his performing career, Sean is a dedicated educator, holding a Pennsylvania Certificate in K-12 Music Education, and has worked as an instrumental music teacher for the School District of Philadelphia since 2016, serving hundreds of public school students across the city.
